Expunging Connecticut Criminal Records

If you are reading this page, it is likely that you have or someone you care about has a Connecticut criminal record you want expunged or pardoned. If so, The Law Office of Jerome Paun can help.

Is an Expungement Worth It?

Absolutely! An expungement has legitimate significance for many reasons, including employment and professional licensing. However, keep in mind that an expungement only restores a person's record to seem like nothing happened, not erase, delete, or remove any soft drinks like a sponge.

Criminal records, including misdemeanor but especially felony convictions, will haunt you for the rest of your life unless you do something about them. As you may already know, a criminal record can prevent you from:

  • getting a job you want or a promotion to a better job;
  • getting a professional or trade license;
  • getting a college or professional school education;
  • getting a bank loan for a car, school, or house;
  • getting a better place for you and your family to live.

Fortunately, the State of Connecticut makes it possible to clear your Connecticut criminal record. The Law Office of Jerome Paun can help you do it!

Please call (860) 455-4202 or fill out an online form to schedule a free and thorough consultation. We can evaluate your situation and explain what might be done to expunge your Connecticut criminal record.

Expungement of a Connecticut Criminal Record

In Connecticut we have two ways to clear or expunge your criminal record, pardons and erasures. Both result in the erasure or expungement of Connecticut criminal records. But a motion for erasure may not clear your entire Connecticut conviction record. An absolute pardon will.

What’s the difference between a pardon and an erasure?

Pardon applications, are filed with and decided by the Board of Pardons and Paroles (BOPP or Board). Though much more complicated, time consuming, and difficult than erasure motions, pardons are what most people need. Pardon applications are not limited to the very specific requirements of erasure motions. Pardon applications apply to all Connecticut criminal records.

If you are granted an absolute (or full) pardon, your entire Connecticut criminal record would be erased (expunged) from public view. Your criminal past won’t haunt your future anymore.

If you apply for or are only given a certificate of employability (COE), your Connecticut criminal record is not erased or expunged. But it cannot be held against you if you apply for certain licenses or jobs.

Motions for erasure of criminal records are filed in and decided by the court where you were convicted, not by the BOPP. They are only useful under very specific and limited circumstances. They do not apply to most people who want to expunge or clear their entire Connecticut criminal record. Under the right circumstances a motion for erasure of criminal records may be all you need.

How Long Does Expungement Take in Connecticut?

The length of time it takes to expunge a criminal record in Connecticut can vary depending on the specifics of the case and the court system's workload. Generally, the expungement process in Connecticut can take 2-3 months to complete.

  1. First, you will need to file a petition for expungement with the court where the case was heard. The court will then review the petition and any supporting documentation to determine whether the request meets the eligibility criteria for expungement.
  2. If the court approves the petition, it will issue an expungement order. The court will then notify any relevant agencies, such as the Connecticut State Police or the Department of Correction, to remove your record from their databases.

The process can take several months from start to finish, as there may be delays in court processing and agency notification.It is important to consult with an attorney familiar with Connecticut's expungement process to ensure that your petition is properly prepared and filed to help minimize any potential delays.
