Larceny & Theft Penalties in Connecticut

According to Section 53a-119 of the Connecticut General Statutes, larceny is considered to be taking, without permission or authorization, goods, services, or money with the intention of depriving the rightful owner of those things permanently. The degree of larceny will depend on the value of the stolen money or goods in question, and this, in turn, will significantly impact the consequences an individual will face if convicted.

The degrees of larceny, and their corresponding penalties, are as follows:

  • Class C Misdemeanor: Up to three months imprisonment, up to $500 fine
  • Class B Misdemeanor: Up to six months imprisonment, up to $1,000 fine
  • Class A Misdemeanor: Up to one-year imprisonment, up to $2,000 fine
  • Class D Felony: 1-5 years imprisonment, up to $5,000 fine
  • Class C Felony: 1-10 years imprisonment, up to $10,000 fine
  • Class B Felony: 1-20 years imprisonment, up to $15,000 fine
